breeding dairy cows
Monday, 01 September 2008

ImageWe now have 250 head of Holstein with 150 cows producing milk at a time.

4,000 litres of milk are produced every day. One cow can produce up to 30 litres per day. The cows are milked twice a day in a milking parlour with 10 stalls. Milking takes about two and a half hours and a dairy worker has to be present all the time. The milk goes directly to the dairy to be made into cheese.

Our cows calve all year round. A birth is always a major event on the farm. The calves are moved to individual pens and fed on reconstituted powdered milk.

The cows are fed twice a day on straw, maize, potato, crushed wheat, alfalfa and minerals.  This is a balanced diet, carefully monitored by our staff and by nutritionists who help us adapt the rations to each cow.
